Garden Tub

The term garden tub typically refers to a larger, deep tub that does not have a shower or jets.  They got their name from 18th century France when wealthy homeowners would have large tubs in their gardens.  They would bathe in the tub and then when the tubs were drained the water would feed the surrounding plants in the garden.

In England larger homes were built with ‘garden rooms’.  These rooms had large windows overlooking the landscape and gardens of the home, similar to sunrooms of today.  A bathtub was placed in the room for bathing making it possible to enjoy the view of the grounds while bathing.  Today’s home garden tubs are frequently placed in front of large windows so that one can enjoy the view.  A corner garden tub adds an even more dramatic effect with two windows overlooking the tub.

For a period of time any bathtub that was under a window was referred to as a garden tub.  A garden tub with no shower head and no jets is just intended for soaking and is sometimes called a soaking tub.  Modern garden tubs are made of acrylic or fiberglass and range in price from $600 to $2000.

Some garden tub owners create a garden tub shower by adding plumbing to the tub area in order to add a shower head.  Others add a hand-help shower head to the garden tub faucet for easier rinsing.

A garden tub can transform a boring bathroom into a space that speaks to romance, class, and sophistication.  It is a place of rest and relaxation not to mention cleanliness.
